Pros and Cons of Landscape Rock:
The Pros: While rock and mulch cost approximately the same up front, rock is ultimately cheaper and easier to maintain in the long run. Rock is the perfect decorative companion for shrubs, trees and hearty perennials. Plus, landscape rock is available in many more options than mulch. However, there are some important draw-backs to consider.
The Cons: Rock weighs much more than mulch, which can cause problems if the ground around your foundation is not properly graded. Under the weight of the rock, the grade can gradually shrink. To prevent water problems, ensure there is a positive grade away from your home. Second, rock is more permanent than mulch. This means rock is more difficult to manuever if you wish to expand your garden or change the color scheme in the coming years. Finally, the poly or plastic beneath the rock must be replaced every 8 to 10 years.
